MPI Cleanups Are a Thing of the Past

It’s time to stop performing regular Master Patient Index (MPI) cleanups. I can’t stress this enough. Stop cleaning up your MPI.

Traditionally, organizations undergo MPI cleanup exercises to discover duplicates that exist in their MPIs. But Verato offers a subscription service that prevents duplicates from being created in the first place—eliminating the need to perform regular MPI cleanups.

Typical MPIs will create duplicates when a patient’s demographic information has changed, has been entered incorrectly, or has only been partially entered. Even the most sophisticated algorithms can’t match two of a patient’s records if those records have widely inconsistent data about the patient. For example, if Rebecca Jones has changed her name and moved, an MPI won’t make a match and a duplicate record for Rebecca will be created.

Same Person, No Match

Verato uses a totally new, next-generation approach to patient matching called “Referential Matching” that can match patient identities even if they have out-of-date, incorrect, or incomplete demographic data. To do this, Verato leverages its comprehensive database of 300M+ US identities as an “answer key” for demographic data. Verato references this database during the matching process. This “Referential Matching” approach allows Verato to match Rebecca’s two very different records, because they both match to the same identity in the Verato “answer key.”

Importantly, you don’t have to rip out your current MPI to see the benefits of the Verato referential matching engine. Verato is a cloud-based service that can be used to turbocharge the matching capabilities of your existing MPI.

This can be done as a one-time service—for example, to help find overlaps between two EHRs or MPIs during an acquisition or merger.

Or it can be done as a subscription service that resolves an MPI’s most difficult match decisions in real-time. In other words, when an MPI can’t decide whether Rebecca and Becky are the same person, it can ask Verato for the answer and receive a response instantly. This allows you to maintain a near-perfect MPI going forward, to eliminate the manual effort involved in resolving difficult match decisions, and to eliminate the need to clean your MPI regularly.
