CORHIO recently opted to integrate Verato technology into its enterprise master patient index (EMPI) technology. [Morgan Honea, CEO of CORHIO] said the HIE wanted to incorporate more types of health data into the CORHIO network.
“Verato’s MPI was incredibly appealing to us because we are right now working very closely with the state and other partners to go beyond traditional health information exchange and start to work on a more social determinant longitudinal record,” Honea said. “It will include folks with housing insecurities, food insecurities, and transportation challenges.”

The future of consumer master data management will be defined by three powerful technologies.
The first is the cloud, and in particular software-as-a-service offerings. The second is “referential matching,” a new paradigm in identity matching that maintains extremely high levels of accuracy even when consumer demographic data is out-of-date, sparse, or inconsistent across records. And the third is automation, and in particular the ability to automate stewardship or the resolution of “suspect duplicate” consumer records flagged by an MDM technology.

Verato utilizes referential matching, which is what drew CORHIO to that option, explained CORHIO CEO Morgan Honea.”

Accurate patient matching is becoming 10x more critical, yet 10x more challenging. This is evidenced by rising duplicate rates — from 10% a decade ago to 18% today — which have created enormous and growing costs to health systems.
The healthcare industry needs a fundamentally different approach to patient matching — and in fact this approach already exists. Organizations should harness Referential Matching technologies to instantly improve the matching of their EHRs and EMPIs.
May 22, 2018
Problems with patient matching underlie many of the more visible portability issues a patient may see from their physician, such as receiving incomplete medical records or going into registration and having an office unable to find their medical record at all. Yet whenever there are barriers to health record portability, patients blame their doctor – not the technology. This means patient matching technologies are suddenly directly affecting patient satisfaction with their providers. Luckily, Referential Matching solutions can improve the patient matching of any EHR or master patient index (MPI) technology.

“CORHIO, a statewide health information exchange in Colorado, is expanding its core mission of enabling routine HIE transactions to now include collecting new sources of information that can help providers better understand their patients and the services they need.
“To support the mission, CORHIO first has to improve its data services and quality, and so the HIE has contracted with software vendor Verato to improve patient matching and better resolve duplicate patient entries. Resolving these types of inconsistencies will be important as the health information exchange starts collecting and using more types of data.”

The well-publicized Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) proposal from the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) contains some very good ideas. For example, providers should indeed have ready access to all health information for their patients. Patients should also have easy access to their health information wherever it resides. But one major criticism of the TEFCA proposal is that it doesn’t address how to enable the nationwide patient matching that is the cornerstone of the entire system. The current generation of matching technology will never be accurate enough to serve on a nationwide scale.
