Electronic health record (EHR) systems, while they’ve made great strides in development, still have a foundational component that is far from fantastic: the master patient index (MPI). And while many health information management (HIM) professionals hoped EHR systems’ MPIs might solve their patient matching headaches, they’re facing a familiar problem — long task lists of flagged “potential duplicates” needing review and remediation, and duplicate rates of 20% or higher.
