This weekend will be filled with thrilling sports matches, including the Women’s Wimbledon Final on Saturday, the Men’s Wimbledon Final on Sunday, the World Cup Third-Place Match on Saturday, and of course the World Cup Final on Sunday.
Personally, I’m most excited about the World Cup Final between Croatia and France. It’s always fun to see an underdog take on a heavy favorite, especially in an event like the World Cup where entire nations’ hopes and dreams are on the line.
One thing I’m not excited about, however, is what has become an all-too-familiar sight in soccer matches: a world-class soccer player writhing on the ground in agony after being tripped, bumped, or (in some cases) looked at the wrong way by the other team. Diving and flopping have become rampant in soccer and in other sports as players “seek a competitive edge” (also known as “cheat”) by selling a foul to the referee—first by dramatically throwing their arms in the air, then helplessly falling to the ground, then grasping at a random appendage while contorting their face in anguish. This typically goes on until the ref blows the whistle, at which point the player will inevitably stand up and continue playing as if they’ve never felt better.
